The Fredericksburg Jaycees have entertained the community with a haunted house for 36 years. This year the Jaycees decided to put a new twist on an old tradition. The new twist includes using the streets and parks of Downtown Fredericksburg as their haunted attraction rather than limiting themselves to just one building. The event, A Nightmare on Caroline Street, is referred to as a haunted walk rather than a haunted house. The City of Fredericksburg has granted permission for this event that promises to deliver the same scares you have come to expect from the Jaycees’ Haunted House.
The Nightmare begins when you step up to the ticket booth at Riverside Park on Sophia St. The route is a one-mile walk around downtown, through parks, and even some alleys! This is not your typical historical ghost walk with tales of past haunts; there will be real creatures lurking through the streets and frightening scenes await you in the parks. You may find creatures, ghosts, and even zombies roaming the path; and don’t forget your camera. You will have an opportunity to get a photo with some of these creatures to share with your friends on Facebook! Who wouldn’t want to take a picture with a local Jaycees’ Zombie or possibly a frightening clown? Oh yes, there is a clown or two for your scaring pleasure!
The Fredericksburg Jaycees is covering a large area and is in need of many volunteers. As an incentive, the Jaycees are donating $1/per volunteer hour to local high school clubs who come out to volunteer their time. It is a great way to earn those community service hours needed to graduate! So, don’t miss out on the opportunity to scare your friends or even teachers! For volunteer information email fburgjayceeswmvp@gmail.com sooner rather than later as they open on Saturday, October 15 and don’t want you to miss out on the fun!
A Nightmare on Caroline Street will run for three nights, October 15, 22, and 29 from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm. You can buy tickets in advance to avoid a long wait in line at www.fredjaycees.eventbrite.com. As always, if you buy tickets at the “door” you must have cash. The event will run during inclement weather unless it’s a torrential down pour, then, even the zombies might not come out to scare the yell out of you! Be sure to friend us on Facebook at A Nightmare on Caroline Street to receive the latest updates. Oh, and don’t forget to tag us if you upload photos with your monster of choice along the walk!
The Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) is a non-profit organization where 21-40 year-olds have the opportunity to develop leadership skills through community service. The Jaycees have participated with the Big Brother’s Big Sisters, Hope House, Fredericksburg Food Bank, and many other community enhancing organizations.
The Jaycees are known for their Annual Haunted House, Easter Egg Hunt, The Heritage Day Parade and River Raft Race, and the Fredericksburg Downtown Christmas Parade. New community events are created every quarter such as the New Year’s Eve Speak Easy scheduled for this December 31, 2011. Information on upcoming events, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities for the Fredericksburg Jaycees can be found at www.fredjaycees.com.
